Types of documents exempt from Hungarian consular legalization

In certain cases, documents issued by competent authorities of Vietnam or Hungary may be exempt from consular legalization based on cooperation agreements between the two countries. Specifically:

1. Exemption from Hungarian Consular Legalization Under Article 6 of the 2018 Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Civil Matters

Public documents issued by authorities of either Contracting Party, or private documents that have been notarized/certified, such as:

  • Birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce certificates, educational certificates, etc.
  • Documents with signatures or identification authenticated by a competent authority.

These documents are exempt from consular legalization if:

  • They are issued by a competent authority of either country.
  • They are transmitted through official communication channels as stipulated in the Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance.

Consular legalization procedure for Vietnamese documents to be used in Hungary

To ensure documents issued in Vietnam can be legally used in Hungary, you need to follow the steps below:

Step 1: Obtain Documents from the Competent Vietnamese Authority

Identify the type of document that requires legalization, then go to the issuing authority to obtain the document.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs performs Hungarian consular legalization. Submit the documents requiring legalization to the Consular Department – Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Hanoi) or the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Foreign Affairs.

The competent authority will review and verify the legality of the documents, including signatures, seals, and format. After verification, the authority will affix a legalization stamp to the documents.

Step 3: Consular Legalization at the Embassy/Consulate General of Hungary

After legalization by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, continue submitting the documents to the Hungarian Embassy in Hanoi or the Consulate General of Hungary in Ho Chi Minh City.
